Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway

Fear has always been my companion. Most people assume I’m fearless because of my books, my career, and my message. The truth is, I’m afraid of something almost every day.

The difference is not that I avoid fear, it’s that I refuse to let it stop me.

Recently, I’ve been learning to scull in a single rowing shell. It’s unstable, unforgiving, and constantly triggers my body’s alarm system. My knuckles are bruised, my balance is shaky, and my mind often tells me to quit. Yet each time I stay in the boat, I build new patterns. Each outing feels a little more settled.

Fear exists to protect us. It’s the amygdala’s way of saying, “Pay attention, this feels like a past threat.” But often, the present moment is safe. If we always obey fear’s alarm, we stay stuck in old patterns. We avoid risk, but we also avoid growth.

The only way out is through. By gently breaking and rebuilding patterns, we teach the mind new stories of safety. We expand what is possible.

So I ask you: What fear is holding you back right now? What new story could you write if you chose to act anyway?

Fear will always be there. Courage is choosing to move forward in its presence.
