Walking on Rocks

Anyone who knows me knows I’m not a fan of walking on unstable ground, especially when it rises into the sky. Yet I often choose to do exactly that.

Discomfort has been a guiding force in my life. When I first started coaching in the late 90s, there was no roadmap. I had to invent my own. One of the earliest techniques I created was called the “Costanza Principle,” inspired by George Costanza from Seinfeld. In one episode, he does the opposite of everything he normally would, and suddenly his life changes.

I realized that doing the opposite breaks your patterns. It forces your brain into a state of plasticity, where learning accelerates and new associations form. You begin to see what was invisible before.

Recently, my daughter asked me to climb Schiehallion, a Munro in the Scottish Highlands. My instinct was to decline. But I couldn’t. So I climbed. It challenged me mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. And at the summit, a massive double rainbow appeared, arriving just as we did, disappearing as we left.

That rainbow felt like a reminder: when you move forward despite fear, life rewards you in ways you can’t predict.

So here’s my question for you: Where in your life could you apply the “Costanza Principle”? What might happen if you leaned into the opposite of comfort? What new possibilities could reveal themselves if you acted in spite of doubt?
