Shine Your Light
We all have a light inside us. A spark that carries purpose, courage, and the capacity to make the world brighter.
This past week in Toronto, after a challenging stretch, I went in search of a good coffee with my sister. What I found was more than coffee. I found a reminder of how powerful it is when people choose to shine.
At Judy’s Café, founded by lifelong friends Donna and Leslie, the mission is simple yet profound: to honour Judy, a spirited woman who lived with Down syndrome and brought joy to everyone she met. The café employs young adults with disabilities, giving them purpose, pride, and a chance to shine. Walking in, I could feel the joy and love in the air. It was impossible not to be moved.

That moment reminded me of a deeper truth I’ve been reflecting on here at Oxford. Light is not just something we carry, it’s something we share. Neuroscience teaches us that connection changes the brain. Theology reminds us that the spirit changes the heart. Together, they show us that when we shine our light, we give others permission to shine theirs.
In a world that can feel uncertain, clarity comes when we choose to live with intention. Impact comes when we choose to act with courage. And transformation comes when we trust that our light matters.
So I ask you: Where are you choosing to shine your light today? How might your willingness to shine create ripples of impact in someone else’s life?
The vision of Judy’s Café is a reminder that there is so much good in the world, as long as you look for it. And when you choose to shine, you become part of that good.
Warmly,
gina 🙂
