Values are our primary evaluation filter. Values direct everything that we do. Values determine what’s important to us. They are how we decide whether our actions are good or bad, or right or wrong. And they are how we decide about how we feel about our actions. Values ultimately drive our results. Do you know what your values are? Does your team know what their values are? What about your organization?
Values are usually the underlying cause of most conflicts. Most people have no idea how to uncover these powerful filters and ensure they are aligned to goals. This is especially true in teams because it is highly unlikely that all team members coincidentally have the same values.
The good news is that is is relatively straightforward to elicit, understand and even change values. In NLP, values are sometimes called criteria and they are usually arranged in a hierarchy. Once you discover your values and the values of your team, then you can get straight to task of aligning the values and ensuring that meet the needs of your goals.
