A Legacy at the Table

I want to share a story that has become a living tradition in my life.

I inherited an extraordinary set of silverware from my grandparents, dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is more than an heirloom, it is a symbol of courage, survival, and enduring connection across generations.

During the Second World War, my grandparents fled to Canada with my mother and her sisters. The silverware was hidden with cousins, waiting in silence for decades. In 1998, nearly 50 years later, my grandfather returned to retrieve it. Remarkably, it was still there, faithfully kept, though tarnished to a deep black.

For years, it remained untouched as it passed from my grandparents to my mother, and eventually to me. Last year, I decided it should no longer sit hidden away. I cleaned it, polished it, and gave it a new purpose.

Thus, the Silverware Suppers were born. Each month, I host a gathering where the silverware becomes a connector bringing people together to share food, conversation, and critical thought. The guests change, the topics shift, but the essence remains the same: expanding our minds, our hearts, and our bellies in community.

This tradition reminds me that legacy is not meant to be locked away. It is meant to be lived, celebrated, and shared.

What traditions or heirlooms in your life carry meaning beyond their physical form? How do you honour the strength and stories of those who came before you? And how might you bring those lessons into the present, creating new memories that will one day become legacy for others?

Reveal greatness,
